Morning Glory Pancakes

Part 3 of “The Ebon Shroud”

A week had passed since Valoric’s visit, and the eerie silence that hung around the tales of ‘The Ebon Shroud’ seemed to deepen. To the common folk of Neverwinter, life buzzed in its usual rhythm.

Pancakes with fruit.

But within the quiet corners of The Burly Earl, amidst the shadows of old scrolls and ancient texts, murmurs of the looming threat slowly unfurled.

In the early hours, before the tavern welcomed its regular patrons, Asmund sat with a distinguished scholar named Eldric, known for his vast knowledge of ancient relics and dark prophecies.

With eyes that held the weight of countless yesterdays, Eldric carefully unraveled the mystic threads surrounding the tales of ‘The Ebon Shroud.’

“The relic,” he whispered in tones barely above the morning breeze, “dates back to the era of the Netherese, a civilization known for its high magic and incredible might.”

Asmund, though versed in many tales of yore, found the Netherese era a veil of mystery, its lore intertwined with unimaginable magic and power.

Eldric continued, his eyes flickering with the glow of ancient knowledge, “The Netherese were pioneers of magic, their prowess unrivaled. The Ebon Shroud, as the tales suggest, was forged in the crucible of their arcane mastery, its shadowy essence a testament to their ability to meld with the veiled forces of the dark.”

The scholar’s voice, soft yet laden with the weight of ancient history, trembled slightly as he delved further into the lore surrounding the relic. “The Ebon Shroud, as legend has it, was crafted by a master enchanter of the Netherese.

The relic is said to have the power to manipulate shadows, to bend the darkness to the will of its wielder,” Eldric said, his eyes losing focus as if seeing through the veils of time.

He shivered, pulling his cloak tighter around him, “The texts mention an aura of fear that envelops those who come near it, a darkness that’s almost sentient.

And the wielder… the wielder gains dominion over this darkness, manipulating it to cloak themselves in shadows, to command shades, or even to snuff out the light of life with but a thought…”

Asmund, his face stoic yet his eyes betraying a glint of concern, leaned in. “You speak of terrifying power, Eldric. Is there truth to these tales, or are they merely the fantasies of ancient minds?”

Eldric sighed heavily, his fingers trembling slightly over the aged pages before him. “The line between lore and truth is as thin as a shadow, Murgen. However, the consistency of these tales through the ages suggests a kernel of truth. And there is more…” his voice trailed off, fear tightening around his words.

“What more?” Asmund urged, his voice steady.

Eldric glanced around nervously before leaning in closer, “In an age past, a rumor whispered through the realms that a demon lord sought the relic. The veil of shadows it commanded was said to be a power even the denizens of the Abyss coveted. But as with many tales of shrouded in the past, the relic vanished into the veils of history, its whereabouts a mystery shrouded in shadow.”

The thought hung in the air, a cold whisper amidst the warmth of the bustling tavern. Asmund absorbed the words, each sentence adding weight to the dread that slowly crept into his heart.

“The Ebon Shroud… if it’s resurfaced,” Asmund mused aloud, “the darkness it holds could shroud the realms in an eternal night.”

Eldric nodded, his eyes reflecting the storm of fear that raged within. “Aye, and in the wrong hands, it could usher in an era of despair the likes of which have not been seen since the days of the Netherese.”

As they delved deeper into the cryptic texts, the morning light ushered in the day’s first patrons. The breakfast special, “Morning Glory Pancakes,” filled the room with a comforting aroma, a stark contrast to the somber discussion at the secluded table.

Fluffy pancakes, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a generous helping of fresh berries and a drizzle of maple syrup, brought a slice of warmth to the crisp morning. As the patrons savored the sweet allure of the morning fare, Eldric and Asmund continued their delve into the veiled mysteries.

Their discussion meandered through forgotten realms and ancient prophecies. Each clue unearthed, each connection made, brought a shiver of reality to the tales surrounding ‘The Ebon Shroud.’

As the morning aged into afternoon, the scholar took his leave, leaving behind a trail of ancient texts for Asmund to ponder upon. The weight of the unknown loomed as the day’s bustling activities took over The Burly Earl.

But amidst the common chatter and clinking glasses, in the quiet corners where shadows whispered, the quest for truth quietly forged ahead, its echo a soft murmur in the heart of The Burly Earl.
