Captain Varek Renn is the self-styled leader of the River Rats, a loosely organized band of extortionists, smugglers, and opportunists who patrol stretches of the Alandor River. He’s equal parts showman and enforcer—a man who believes charisma is as valuable as a blade, and that the illusion of power is sometimes more useful than the real thing.
Varek doesn’t claim to be a pirate or a villain—just a man who saw a gap in the river trade and filled it. Merchants like Dorian Grantham may grumble at the tolls he demands, but he keeps his word: pay the toll, and your barge floats on without trouble. Fail to pay, and you might not float at all.
Despite his theatrics, Varek is pragmatic and clever. He knows where the line is—and how to dance right along it.
Appearance
Varek Renn is in his early forties, lean and wiry with a pirate’s grin and eyes that constantly scan for weakness. He wears a patchwork coat of dyed leather and river silk, decorated with trophies from “deals gone right” and knives from ones that didn’t. His dark hair is swept back, and he keeps a scruffy beard streaked with gray. His tricorn hat is absurd, and he wears it with pride.
Personality & Traits
- Theatrical. He plays up the rogue captain role, complete with dramatic threats and exaggerated courtesy.
- Ruthless Pragmatist. Behind the charm lies a sharp mind that calculates risk constantly.
- Respects Consistency. He’ll harass a merchant once, but if they pay up regularly, he sees them as a “partner.”
- Loyal to His Own. The River Rats may be scoundrels, but they’re his scoundrels.
Duties & Influence
Varek leads the River Rats with a loose hand and a sharp tongue. They operate like a protection racket: they patrol known river routes, offer “safe passage” in exchange for goods or coin, and keep smaller bandit groups at bay. Varek ensures that his gang never takes too much from the same merchant—he prefers reliable income to unnecessary risk.
He’s built a small network of spies, informants, and lookouts who track barge traffic along the river, alerting him when a familiar or lucrative target is coming.
Relationships & Allies
- River Rats: Loyal, disorganized, and deeply superstitious. They’d follow Varek into fire—as long as there’s coin on the other side.
- Dorian Grantham: A long-time “client.” There’s grudging respect on both sides—Renn admires Dorian’s grit, and Dorian tolerates Varek’s theatrics because they keep worse bandits at bay.
- City Officials: Bribes and fear keep some dockhands and inspectors from interfering with Varek’s operations—though he knows this won’t last forever.
- Potential Rivals: If someone tries to push him out of his territory, Varek will respond with flair and fury.
Plot Hooks & Story Integration
- Power Shift. A younger member of the River Rats tries to overthrow Renn, drawing the party into internal gang politics.
- Deal or Die. Varek approaches the party with a proposition—help him smuggle a high-value item, and he’ll forgive an old debt or clear a path.
- An Old Grudge. A town once burned by Varek’s crew seeks vengeance—and the party might get caught in the middle.
- Changing the Game. Varek is looking to go legit… or at least make it seem that way. He wants a diplomatic envoy (maybe the party) to negotiate “terms” with Crimmor’s merchants.
