The Shadowmarch Sandwich

Part 4 of “The Ebon Shroud”

A fortnight since Eldric’s revelations, The Burly Earl thrummed with a quiet intensity. Rumors of ‘The Ebon Shard’ remained contained within its walls, known only to a select few who navigated the treacherous waters of ancient prophecies and impending doom.

Asmund, now bearing the weight of foreknowledge, knew that acting discreetly was paramount. The relic’s potential resurgence was a ticking clock, and time was slipping away.

Asmund recognized the need to rally allies. The threat looming over Neverwinter was not one to be faced alone, and the intricate web of his vast network would be put to the test.

As The Burly Earl began its day, a swift messenger named Liora, known for her discreetness and speed, entered. Her appearance was unassuming, and her entrance almost ghostly in its quietude. She bore a sealed missive, its wax emblem a symbol known only to a select few.

Asmund took the message, reading its contents with a grave expression. Liora waited patiently, sipping on a fresh brew, her sharp eyes scanning the tavern.

“You’re not typically the bearer of such messages, Liora,” Asmund remarked as he finished reading.

“The Harpers move where the shadows grow deepest,” she replied, her voice a hushed tone.

Reading the contents, Asmund’s expression darkened. “The Ebon Shroud… its history, its threat…” he murmured, more to himself.

Liora, sensing the gravity of the situation, leaned in, “I’ve heard whispers too. The Underdark stirs, and the surface world isn’t the only realm in turmoil.”

Asmund, lost in thought for a moment, quickly scribbled a response on a fresh piece of parchment. Folding it, he handed it to Liora. “This needs to reach Graymar. He must be informed.”

Liora, securing the message, met his gaze, “Finding Graymar won’t be a challenge. The Harpers have eyes everywhere.”

Asmund sensed Liora’s long journey and weariness. “Before you depart,” he began, signaling for a meal, “you must try our latest creation.”

The “Shadowmarch Sandwich” arrived at their table, its aroma immediately tantalizing. Layers of succulent roasted beef, crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and fragrant herbs were all held together by slices of fresh, crusty bread. A tangy mustard sauce, drizzled generously, added a zesty kick, promising both flavor and sustenance.

Liora, initially hesitant, took a bite, and her eyes widened in surprise. “This is… incredible,” she admitted, clearly taken aback by the depth of flavors. “I’ve had many a meal on the road, but this… this is something else.”

Asmund chuckled, “It’s a specialty here. Designed for those who need sustenance for the long journeys ahead. The blend of ingredients not only fills the stomach but also invigorates the spirit.”

Liora took another bite, savoring the taste. “It’s a meal fit for a king, yet perfect for a messenger on the go. You’ve outdone yourself, Asmund.”

With her spirits lifted and her energy restored by the sandwich, Liora prepared to depart, now equipped with Asmund’s message for Graymar. The weight of their tasks was substantial, but moments like these, shared over exceptional food, offered a glimmer of hope amidst the shadows.
